Bruxism

Bruxism

Bruxism is a disorder that involves involuntary and conscious clenching of the jaw, as well as grinding of the teeth, both during the day and during sleeping hours. This problem affects a considerable part of the population, reaching around 20%, and is usually closely linked to stress and anxiety.

Bruxism often leads to a series of additional symptoms, such as sleep disorders, headaches, migraines, discomfort in the face, jaw or ears, which can be aggravated during periods of stress. In the long term, constant teeth clenching can cause significant wear on the teeth and, if not addressed, can result in the development of osteoarthritis in the jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

The diagnosis of bruxism is usually based on the detection of signs such as dental wear or thickening of the masseter muscle, as well as the presence of symptoms such as headaches, especially in the morning, or facial pain.
